Florence Larmay “Miss Flo” Raad, 89, a resident of Wesley Commons Assisted Living, died on Sept. 12, 2011 at the Hospice House. Born in Oakland, Calif., on April 3, 1922, she lived and worked most of her life in Chicago and was an office manager at Penton Publishing Co. for over 15 years. In 1980, she moved to Cleveland where she worked for two hospitals and eventually retired to Greenwood, S.C. in 1992.
After attending Northern Baptist Theological Seminary, Mrs. Raad was a minister’s wife for over 15 years and a Sunday school teacher for over 40 years. A strong Christian all her life, she was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church after moving to Greenwood.
Florence Raad is survived by her children, Holly (Mac) Hubbard and John (Mary) Raad of Oak Park; her grandsons, Eric (Amanda), Jason, Bradley, and Jonathan Raad of Oak Park; her great-grandson, Michael; her sister, Ruth L. Winslow; her niece, Susan (Arthur) Karas; her nephew, Larry (Gina) Winslow; her grandniece, Alexandra Karas; and her grandnephew, Christopher Karas. She is also survived by her “adopted” daughters, Marie (Benny) Boggess and Shirley Dawson and a host of loving friends from Westminster Presbyterian Church, South Main Baptist Church and throughout the Greenwood area. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence J. and Florence J. Larmay; and her sisters, Laura Larmay and Rosemary Kidder.
A memorial service was held on Sept. 16 at Westminster Presbyterian Church with Dr. Chris Leonard and Rev. Debby Plumstead-Marshall officiating. A graveside service will be held at Mount Olive Cemetery in Chicago in late October.
