The OPRF volleyball team opened the season last week with a 1-1 record, falling to St. Ignatius but regrouping to sweep area-rival Trinity 25-11, 25-17.

Sophomores Amy Schembari (outside hitter), Kiley Nelson (middle hitter) and Emma Dunne head up this year’s squad, with seniors Audrey Greffin (middle hitter), Erin Martin (outside hitter), Haley Clark (right side) and Katy Oldach (server) falling into leadership roles. Juniors Alena Tourtelotte (outside hitter) and Ellie Herner (libero) are also expected to contribute significantly.

“I have high expectations based upon what I saw [in the first two matches],” said OPRF head coach Don August. “We are fairly athletic, have reasonable size and decent club experience. I believe we will be quite strong by the end of the season.”

York, Hinsdale Central and Lyons Township are all ranked in many top 10 preseason polls. The Lions are coming off a Class 4A State title, but lost 10 seniors to graduation, including Jocelynn Birks, now at the University of Illinois.

The Huskies travel to New Trier for an invitational this weekend. They’ll host Lyons in their West Suburban (Silver) Conference opener on Sept. 6, followed by a showdown at rival Fenwick on Sept. 8 (both matches begin at 6 p.m.).
