Inger Olson Klumpner, 86, died on July 20, 2011. Born on April 26, 1925 in Alafors, Sweden in the house that her father and grandfather built, she came to the United States as a very young girl and settled in a Swedish community on Chicago’s South Side near Hyde Park. When she was a sophomore at South Shore High, she found her passion in her high school newspaper and became editor-in-chief during her senior year. Upon graduation, she was offered a scholarship to both the University of Chicago and Northwestern University. Seeking a broad education, she eventually chose the University of Chicago where she met her husband George Klumpner at a medical school dance.
Mrs. Klumpner earned a master’s degree while raising two children and was an instructor at Morton College and assistant professor of psychology at both Roosevelt and Dominican universities. She was heavily involved in the Art Institute of Chicago and many other charitable organizations. She loved the outdoors and was an avid gardener. She called Oak Park home for over three decades.
Inger Klumpner is survived by her husband, George H.; her son, Jim (Elsie); her grandchildren, Thomas and Susan; and her sister, Lillian (Robert) Nielsen. She was preceded in death by her son, George Harold (Ester).
Visitation was held at Drechsler, Brown & Williams Funeral Home on July 25. Services were held on July 26, followed by private interment.
