The MacDowell Artists Association held their annual scholarship auditions on Saturday, April 30 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Oak Park. This scholarship opportunity is open to high school seniors who plan to study music in college or conservatory. This year’s winners are given below.
First Place winner Elizabeth Rose Grizzell, receiving a $2000 scholarship, has been playing harp for 12 years, with no intentions of stopping. She currently studies under Marguerite Lynn Williams, the new Principal Harpist of the Lyric Opera of Chicago. Rose has appeared on the WFMT radio program Introductions, performing Benjamin Britten’s Ceremony of Carols. She is also a founding member of the Chicagoland Pops Orchestra. Rose regularly plays harp at weddings and parties and enjoys playing her music for others. Next year she will be attending Carthage College to study Harp and Musical Theatre.
The second place winner Eric Konrad Duwe, receiving a $1500 scholarship, is currently a senior at Oak Park River Forest High School and will attend the University of Wisconsin at Madison next fall as a piano performance major, where he additionally received a scholarship for musical excellence from the UW School of Music. In June of 2010, Eric received the Sam Licata Award for excellence in completion of Level XI of the Illinois State Music Teacher’s Association (ISMTA) Achievement in Music Exam. Eric is also a violist in the Oak Park River Forest High School Symphony Orchestra where he has been second chair. Eric has studied piano for 13 years – 8 of the 13 years with Hannah Voigt of Oak Park. He has studied viola for 5 years (violin for 4 years prior to that) with Sarah Gasse of Forest Park. At Oak Park River Forest High School Eric has been an academic honor roll student for four years (2007 – 2011) and in 2009, he received the History Division Award. Eric has been a contributor to the News Staff for the high school newspaper, Trapeze, and he has worked part-time at Better Homes and Gardens Gloor Realty in Administrative Support Staff from 2008 – present.
Third place winner Gaby Klugman, receiving a $1000 scholarship, is currently a senior at Oak Park River Forest High School and will be attending University of Wisconsin-Madison in the fall to study voice and liberal arts. She has been studying voice for about five years, and last year won the Audrey E. Smith vocal competition at Oak Park River Forest High School. Throughout high school she has participated in choir as well as smaller vocal ensembles and musical theater.
Bethany Stannard, receiving an honorable mention, is a resident of Chicago and a senior at Antioch Christian High School. She began studying violin with Angelo Rico, her grandfather, and has spent the last 4 years under Drostan Hall at the Hall School of Music. Bethany played in the Chicago All-City Symphony Orchestra from 6th-8th grade, performing each spring at Orchestra Hall. During high school, she has participated in the Baroque Festival Orchestra in Wheaton, IL, which is scheduled to play on WFMT’s “Introductions” for the second time. Bethany plans to continue violin next fall in the Concordia University Chicago Chamber Orchestra in River Forest, IL.
