Add a bag of peanuts to your shopping list, dear readers. Happy Squirrel Appreciation Day!

I like squirrels, and I do try to do my share for the little buggers.  Not that they’re fussy – there is a colony in my neighborhood that raids the dumpsters all the time. I’m not sure this puts them in the same league as the vile raccoon, but as the years go on I find their shiny beady black eyes ever more unsettling.

In the final analysis I guess they’re cute.  They frolic, they scold, I remember that Beatrix Potter book Squirrel Nutkin from my childhood. And while I can’t speak for her I’m pretty sure that E has adopted them as her totem spririt.  I reckon that society has conditioned me to embrace a creature that is a cuter version of a rat.

So, Happy Squirrel Appreciation Day, Americans.  Embrace your local squirrel.

You first.
