The Friars downed Rockford 5-3 to win the Blackhawk Charities Tournament. Fenwick took a 4-0 lead in the first period but Rockford scored three in the second to make the game interesting.

Aiden Verbeke, Fenwick’s leading scorer (46) scored for the Friars, as did Ryan Fleming, Dale Zigulich and Tim Tynan.

It was Fenwick’s third tournament championship this season.

OPRF wrestling

The Huskies lost to Hinsdale Central 38-29 last week, dropping them to 2-1 in the West Suburban (Silver) Conference and breaking their long-standing perfect conference record.

Chirino Watson, Jamaal Bovell, Nate Crain, Joey Ariola and Michael Woulfe were among OPRF’s winners, but defending state champ Sam Brooks, who was wrestling up at 215 pounds, lost to Hinsdale Central’s Brian Allen.

Fenwick finished third at the 17th Annual Marquette Invitational in Milwaukee last week.

Ryan Greenway finished second in the 50-yard freestyle with a season-best time of 22.12 seconds. Greenway, Justin White, Connor Brown and Viken Huening took second in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:29. Brown also finished third in the 100-yard freestyle with a season-best time of 48.71 seconds.

Waukesha South (Wis.) won the meet with a score of 286.5, while Arrowhead (Wis.) finished second with 254 points and Fenwick third with 209.

“We had a bunch of season best times in this meet, which is a nice thing to see in this part of the season,” said Fenwick head coach Luke McGuire, who was reunited with some University of Wisconsin college buddies at the meet (two are high school coaches in Wisconsin). “We have our exams this week, and the Sandberg invite this weekend. This has been a big meet for us the last few years and we are hoping for some more time drops.”
