Nothing stood in the way of the Fenwick girls basketball’s team quest to retake the Dundee-Crown Charger Classic title this season. The Friars, who lost to New Trier last season in the championship game, marched right through the tournament this time around by outscoring their four opponents by a total score of 265-158, including securing a 65-47 victory over fourth-ranked Bartlett in the title game on Thursday.
Kyra Navarrete played a major role in all of Fenwick’s wins, including providing a 22-point performance in an 82-51 revenge thumping of New Trier in the semifinals and a 23-point performance in the win over Bartlett. The 6-foot senior scored 15 points in the first half against Bartlett and the Friars (14-1) cruised to a 34-21 advantage by the break.
The Hawks (15-1) never came within more than six points in the second half.
Sarah Williams added 11 points and six rebounds for the Friars, who didn’t have trouble dispatching New Trier from the get-go either. They took a 17-point lead early in the opening quarter and never looked back.
Along with Navarrete’s 22 points, Williams finished with 18 and Maggie Reilly 12 in that win.
The Friars, who claimed their ninth Dundee-Crown Charger Classic title, clobbered Naperville Central 66-37 in the second round. Kathleen Roche led the Friars with 14 points, while Williams added 10.
Fenwick toppled Regina 52-23 in the first round. Williams scored 14 points in that win.
Before the Dundee Crown Tournament, the Friars crushed Proviso West 66-40. Williams led the charge with 16 points, while Navarrete added 11 and Marek Burchett 10.
The Friars return home on Saturday to take on Bishop McNamara. They begin the McDonald’s Prep Classic at Willowbrook on Jan. 15.
