MANNkind is a service learning organization recently launched at Mann School, 921 N. Kenilworth, that seeks to inspire kids to give back to their community. The organization is planning a series of service projects, including several that will feature a classroom component. The children are largely responsible for leading the discussion of the projects within their classes, with the assistance of a parent volunteer. The out-of-school component of the projects will be voluntary. To date, MANNkind has:
- Visited the residents of Oak Park Arms and showed them their Halloween costumes.
- Wrote 500 thank you letters to people who serve the community on a daily basis, including police, fire fighters, crossing guards, postmen and women, veterans, soldiers, emergency room/hospital personnel, representatives from the Animal Care League, etc.
- Delivering “thank you” donuts to some of the people mentioned in the bullet point above who had to work on Thanksgiving.
