Trinity basketball

The Blazers (10-2) had three players score in double digits to produce a 59-29 victory over Vernon Hills last week. Taricka Linzy led the onslaught with 16 points, while Alyssa Dengler finished with 14 and Megan Podkowa 13. Linzy also had eight steals in the win.

Trinity was scheduled to face Lake Zurich on Tuesday (after deadline) in the opening round of the Lake Zurich Christmas Tournament. Tonight (Dec. 22) the Blazers face St. Francis Wheaton (5:30 p.m.). On Thursday, they take on Loyola.

The tournament title game is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 28.

Fenwick hockey

The Friars earned three Catholic League wins last week. Fenwick downed St. Ignatius 6-2, Providence 6-1, and Marist 5-2.

Brendan Fitzgerald led the Friars in the Marist victory by scoring two goals.

A solid defensive effort by Dan Marotz, Mike Fischer, Austin Zima and Dale Zigulich led to Fenwick’s win over St. Ignatius.

The Friars finished fourth (216 points) at the Midwest Invitational in Peoria on Saturday.

Connor Brown and Eric Bell led Fenwick. Brown finished third in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 49.73 seconds, while Bell finished third in the 100-yard backstroke in 55.63 seconds.

Matt Bresnahan finished fifth in the 200-yard free (1:52.48) and sixth in the 500-yard free (5:12.10).

OPRF wrestling

In spite of having three main wrestlers out with injuries the Huskies battled Mt. Carmel on Friday but came up just short, falling to the Caravan 32-30.

With Colin Rogers, Nate Crain and defending state champ Sam Brooks out of the lineup, OPRF (5-4, 1-0) had some new names emerge at the winner’s podium. Brian Toledo won at 160 pounds, while Kris Ellis won at 171.

Others who scored victories included Marq Brumant, Darius Henry, Cameron Harris and Ty Flemming.

Coppage rushes for 299 yards

Former OPRF football player Levell Coppage ran for 299 yards and three touchdowns to lead Wisconsin-Whitewater to a 31-21 victory over Mount Union in the NCAA Division III Championship in Salem, Va., last week.

The victory earned Wisconsin-Whitewater its second straight D-III championship title.
