While only two home meets were scheduled — usually there are about four — the OPRF boys swim team is anticipating not diving into it’s own pool this season.
OPRF head coach Peter Quinn said while he hasn’t been told an exact date when his Huskies may splash into their own pool, he and is staff are preparing the team for the worse-case scenario this season. “it’s just easier that way,” he added.
The pool has been out of commission because proper permits were not obtained by the contractor for work done over the summer. (Click here for more info.)
“It’s not ideal, but it is what it is,” Quinn echoed the sentiment of girls coach Clyde Lundgren before Lundgren’s team began the fall season without a home pool. “We’re trying to make the best of the situation.”
The girls team spent the entire fall season without a home pool.
The boys team is being sent over to Leyden and Morton East high schools for tryouts and practices this week, and have already switched a home meet to an away meet. The only home meet currently left on the schedule is Jan. 28 against Downers Grove North for Senior Night.
“Right now that date will remain. As we get closer to it we’ll determine whether or not we will indeed be hosting the event,” said Quinn, who added that in his 18 years of coaching swimming at OPRF he has never been without a home pool.
The Huskies open the season at the Barrington Invitational on Saturday. They travel down the street to cross-town rival Fenwick on Dec. 7 (5 p.m.).
