At 6-foot-1, Megan Podkowa is known more for her scoring and rebounding than for swiping the ball away from opponents. But on Tuesday night in River Forest, the Trinity junior pocketed a career-high eight steals to help lead Blazers to a 49-36 victory over area-rival OPRF.

Podkowa also led the game in scoring with 16 points in the season-opener for both teams. Senior Taricka Linzy added 11 points for the Blazers (1-0), while Alyssa Dengler chipped in nine and Mikayla Leyden six.

Trinity took a marginal 12-11 lead in the first quarter and held a two-point advantage by halftime. Opening night jitters quelled in the second half as the Blazers went on a 7-0 run to break away.

By the end of the contest, Podkowa had added eight rebounds to her impressive stats. Trinity’s Vicki Harris hauled down eight boards as well.

Stekara Hall scored a team-high 14 points for the Huskies, who travel to Fenwick for a cross-town showdown on Thursday (7 p.m.).
