You can tell it’s election season. In the past 24 hours I have been approached by two housecats who clearly were on the prowl to get my vote. I consider myself independent. And when I think back about my voting record I have quite often picked third party candidates. (Anyone remember John Anderson? And I refuse to apologize for voting for Ralph Nader in 2000) In light of my past support of political outsiders I see no reason why a ten-pound housecat isn’t up to the job.
I was working in conservative DuPage County yesterday when I was approached on a jobsite by a small friendly black cat. I immediately thought, ” Ha! Another witch running for office!” until I noticed his white paws. White paws are a sign of nobility and integrity, and this cat was clearly pandering for my vote when he rolled on his back – all loveydovey the way they do – in the dry leaves.
Closer to home in liberal Oak Park I was greeted today by a well known local orange tomcat. He and I go back a few years, and I doubt he is bound by the ideologies of the major parties. He clearly doesn’t suffer fools easily, and has an independent streak a mile wide. Of course, I see him as a good judge of character – after all, he comes to see me when I call him in the alley.
I can’t vote in DuPage County but I heartily endorse the “non-Wiccan black cat” as a write in for public office. Here in Cook County I plan to vote for the “orange tomcat.” I was thinking of the Governor’s race, but I think County Assessor would be a better post for a candidate who is clearly in tune with his local community.
Vote for a couple of true outsiders this fall – Vote Housecat!
