Journal reporter Marty Stempniak had an informative and relatively detailed report on the Village’s 2011 budget in last week’s paper. (Click here to read the article.) The Village is trying to balance its budget with a little revenue increase from various taxes and fees, and some modest cuts. No big deal.

But what caught my eye was that the proposed budget had no personnel cutbacks because the Village had trimmed about 70 positions over the past three years. It seems to me that there has been no diminution in Village services over the last three years. Fires got put out. Bad guys got arrested. Leaves and snow got removed. What did these 70 people do, and how come we don’t miss them? Could the Village cut more personnel? How does our staffing compare to Evanston, LaGrange and Elmhurst? An inquiring mind wants to know.
