The Gwendolyn Brooks Middle School girls cross-country team ran away with second place at the Roy Gummerson Invitational held at Schiller Woods on Sept. 25.

The team, made up of one eighth grader and a mix of sixth and seventh graders, was led by Mary Blankemeier followed by Ainsley Tran.

Along with Blankemeier and Tran, Evelyn Puccetti, Hallie Voss, Christen Conley, Brianna McCormick, Olivia Vejcik, Theresa Wilkie, Claire Doyle and Emma Dempsey also contributed to the favorable finish.

The sixth and seventh graders also placed first at the Troy Invitational on Sept. 18. At Troy, all the runners on the Brooks team finished in the top 20 out of 327 runners.

The team, which is coached by Stacie Klein and Don Robinson, is hoping to advance to the state meet for the second consecutive year.
