Oak Park police are tracking down suspects in the wake of a July 30 brawl in Longfellow Park, 610 S. Ridgeland. The fight, which involved two groups of high school-aged Oak Parkers, left one boy injured and needing medical attention, though his injuries were not life-threatening.
Over the course of the past week, police have arrested three young men: Prince Young of Oak Park, 18; an Oak Park boy; and a Chicago boy who formerly lived in Oak Park.
Young and the Oak Park boy were each charged with four counts of mob action and two counts of battery, and the Chicago boy was charged with four counts of mob action and one count of battery.
“There was an argument and they ended up getting into a fight. One group just got the better of the other group,” said police Cmdr. LaDon Reynolds.
The victims were four Oak Park boys. Reynolds said police are still seeking to charge two to three more people.
“It’s still under investigation,” Reynolds said. “As we’re getting information, we’re making arrests. We’re still sorting through it all.”
Possession of controlled substance
Maritza Nasra of Berwyn, 31, was arrested the evening of Aug. 2 at CVS Pharmacy, 6748 Roosevelt in Oak Park, and charged with retail theft and possession of a controlled substance. She allegedly stole a $6.19 container of vitamins, and an $8.99 nutritional drink. When police were searching her, they allegedly found 0.7 grams of heroin.
Matthew D. Silberman of Arlington Heights, 19, was stopped and arrested the night of Aug. 3 at Citgo, 333 Lake in Oak Park, and charged with possession of a controlled substance. Police pulled Silberman over because of suspicious activity, and found 5.2 grams of heroin in the car. Police said he also had a needle and a spoon in the car.
Michael J. McMahon of Chicago, 33, was arrested early the morning of Aug. 4 on the 100 block of Franklin in River Forest and charged with possession of a controlled substance. Police responded to a domestic dispute call at the address, possibly involving a sword, but instead allegedly found McMahon with 0.31 grams of heroin.
Possession of cannabis
JaJuan Phillips of Oak Park, 19, was arrested the evening of Aug. 5 on the 1000 block of S. Lombard and charged with possession of cannabis. Police said they pulled him over for a traffic violation and smelled cannabis when they approached his vehicle. They searched the vehicle and allegedly found 16.7 grams of cannabis.
Jerome Austin of Chicago, 36, was stopped and arrested on the 400 block of N. Harlem in Oak Park early the morning of Aug. 6 and charged with possession of cannabis, driving with a suspended license and driving with a suspended registration. Police allegedly found 1.4 grams of marijuana on Austin during a search.
Harold Hamilton of Oak Park, 19, was arrested the evening of Aug. 8 on Lake Street near Scoville, and charged with possession of cannabis. Police said he allegedly had 4.5 grams of cannabis.
An envelope containing $200 in cash was snatched out of a man’s hand as he left a currency exchange at 2 Madison in Oak Park the evening of Aug. 2. The offender fled eastbound on foot into Chicago.
Someone broke into a home on the 1200 block of N. Taylor sometime between July 26 and August 2 and stole six rings and miscellaneous credit cards from a bedroom dresser. The total loss was estimated at $16,828.
Someone tried to steal a central air conditioning unit from a home on the 1100 block of S. Lombard overnight between Aug. 4 and Aug. 5. The suspects cut the unit’s copper tubing and electrical cord, and then moved it off its platform.
Someone stole a doorbell button and its plastic cover from a home on the first block of Lake in Oak Park sometime between Aug. 5 and Aug. 7. The loss was estimated at $30.
Travis Long of Maywood, 21, was arrested the night of Aug. 3 and charged with stealing a hex screw set from Frank’s Deli, 7971 Lake in River Forest. It was valued at $6.55.
A man and a woman in their 20s with a girl took $88.28 worth of Crayola crayons and markers from CVS, 345 Madison in Oak Park, the evening of Aug. 8. The two adults allegedly put the goods in a basket and then simply walked out without paying.
Someone broke into an apartment on the 1000 block of N. Harlem in Oak Park by damaging the back door handle during the day on Aug. 2. Once inside, a silver Dell laptop, a 19-inch Toshiba flat screen TV and miscellaneous checks were stolen.
Overnight between Aug. 3 and Aug. 4, someone entered Stevenson Center at 49 Lake in Oak Park, possibly by using the keys. Once inside, the perpetrator removed glass from an inner door to the activity room with a pry tool and reached through to unlock the door. They then tried to break into the activity room’s storage closet with the same tool, damaging the lock and hinges, but failed. The damage was estimated at $1,000.
Alvaro Rodriguez of Chicago was stopped and arrested on the 200 block of S. Ridgeland early the morning of August 5, and charged with DUI.
Daniel Saucedo of Chicago, 20, was stopped and arrested early the morning of Aug. 7 on the first block of Madison in Oak Park, where he was charged with DUI.
Diana Canelo of Berwyn, 33, was arrested early the morning of Aug. 9 on the 1000 block of S. East Ave. in Oak Park and charged with DUI.
These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Oak Park and River Forest police departments from August 2 to August 9. Not all incidents that occurred are listed. Anyone named in reports has only been charged with a crime and cases have not yet been adjudicated.
