It’s summer, and that means bikes are flying through the streets of Oak Park and River Forest. It also means, unfortunately, that they’re getting stolen.
Police say the best way to avoid thefts is to be smart and informed, so Wednesday Journal is building interactive bike maps each week with Google Maps to give you more information on what’s getting stolen, and where.
Remember to register your bike with Oak Park or River Forest police, and use a u-lock to secure it when it’s parked.
One notable arrest this week was Victor Gonzalez of Chicago, 42, was arrested on the 1100 block of South Blvd. in Oak Park the afternoon of July 23 and charged with felony theft of a bicycle and criminal damage to property. Police Chief Rick Tanksley said police believe Gonzalez may have been involved in several other bike thefts.
