It came to light recently that the first three covers of Golf Digest, a popular magazine that began in Evanston in 1950, featured former Oak Parker Helen Olson.

Gracing the cover in the spring of 1950, summer of 1950 and early spring of 1951 is Olson, at the time a 23-year-old professional model, according to a recent article in the magazine.

Olson was picked for the cover due to her keen knowledge of the sport. As a teen, Olson held a 4-handicap. So when the magazine was looking for a model who could pose comfortably as a golfer, she fit the bill to a tee (pun intended).

Olson went on to model and play golf. She traveled the country modeling and later became a three-time club golf champion at the Country Club at Boca Raton in Florida.

Olson, now 83, currently lives in Hilton Head, N.C.

Jusk named Pitcher of the Year

Concordia University Chicago senior pitcher Jason Jusk was recently named the Northern Athletics Conference Pitcher of the Year.

Jusk finished the season with a perfect 7-0 record, including wins over 2010 NCAA tournament teams Aurora University and Webster University. The 6-foot-2 right-hander led the conference with a 1.80 ERA over 60 innings. Jusk struck out 49 batters while walking just 14, and opponents hit .199 off him.

“Jason gave us a great couple of years after coming off of Tommy John surgery,” said Cougar head coach Spiro Lempesis. “He became our number one pitcher late last year which carried into this season. His control and finesse on the mound were outstanding, and he was one of the very few pitchers to have a WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched) under one (0.95). His stats spoke loudly on the year he had especially when compared to some of the top pitchers in our conference.”

Coleman wrestles on a ship

Former OPRF High School star wrestler Ellis Coleman took to the mat in an unusual place last week.

Coleman, who closed out his senior year at OPRF with a record of 45-1 and 35 pins, grappled Spenser Mango of St. Louis aboard the air-craft carrier the USS Intrepid as part of the Beat the Streets Gala in New York City.

Coleman is currently attending the U.S. Olympic Education Center.
