Andrew Matticks, 11, a fifth grader who attends Mann School in Oak Park, recently won first place at the Illinois Kids Wrestling Federation Midget State Finals Tournament held in Danville.
Matticks was the top seed in his bracket of 32 wrestlers and won at 95 pounds. He outscored his opponents 29-2 without giving up any offensive points in the tournament.
Matticks has been selected to represent Illinois at the AAU National Elementary School Team Duals in Kingsport, Tenn., on April 16-18.
Matticks is a member of the OPRF Little Huskies wrestling team.
Bertucci competes at D-I
Nick Bertucci, who graduated from Fenwick in 2005 after becoming the school’s first individual state wrestling champion, went 2-2 at the NCAA Division I Wrestling National Championship Tournament.
Bertucci, a senior at Purdue, is a four-time Big Ten All-Academic Award winner. The 149-pounder placed eighth at the Big Ten Wrestling Tournament this year.
Liston earns another accolade
Adding to her Ms. Basketball distinction bestowed by the Chicago Tribune and the Illinois High School Girls Basketball Coaches Association a few weeks back, Fenwick senior Tricia Liston was named to the third team of Parade Magazine’s All-America High School Girls Basketball Team.
The Duke-bound Liston, who led the Friars to a third-place finish at the Class 3A State Tournament this season, was one of 40 top players in 18 states selected by coaches, scouts and recruiters.
Sullivan helps Blues win
Oak Parker Conor Sullivan was a member of the Chicago Blues peewee hockey team that won the USA Hockey’s Tier II U12 National Championship last week in Reston, Va.
