Buying a home is generally considered a wealth-generating investment for middle-class homebuyers. But wouldn’t it be great if that investment generated wealth for nonprofit organizations, too?

I just experienced this wealth-extending strategy buying a house in Oro Valley, Ariz. because my Realtor likes to “give back” after helping clients buy or sell a home. In my case, Rita Gibbs of Tierra Antigua Realty is donating 15 percent of her net commission to two nonprofit organizations I chose. Half the amount will go to the Temwani Children’s Foundation in Zambia, Africa, and the rest to Wingspan, a Tucson organization promoting lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality.

Rita may not be the only Tucson realtor engaged in a giving-back business practice, but I am so glad I found her. She not only helped me find the perfect house, but gave me the opportunity to generate wealth for important nonprofit work. What a wonderful way to begin my part-time Arizona residency!
