The OPRF softball team edged Morton 2-1 in a West Suburban Conference crossover game last week.

Leah Bry (1-1) allowed just two hits, but no earned runs or walks in seven innings. The Senior right-hander struck out a whopping 15 batters.

The Huskies scattered six hits, including two by Marisa Belpedio. The senior drove in both the runs. Alana Weitzenfeld went 2-for-3, while Lauren Flannery and Emily Bacalao each had one hit apiece for the Huskies (1-1).

OPRF hosts Wheaton-Warrenville South today (Wednesday, March 31) at 11 a.m. On Saturday the welcome Lake Park for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.

OPRF boys water polo

The Huskies pushed their undefeated record to 7-0 with a 16-6 mauling of Morton last week.

Tommy Poulos, Matt Michon, John Vertichio, and Eric Hallman all recorded three goals each in the match. Dylan O’Connell added two goals in the win.

Trinity softball

The Blazers crushed Timothy Christian 14-0 in five innings last week. Led by a two-run blast by Nicole Evans, Trinity scored seven runs in the third. Vivi Castellano went 4-for-4 with five RBIs in the victory.

OPRF soccer

The Huskies blanked Riverside-Brookfield 5-0 in non-conference action last week. Emily Gullo led the way with three goals, while Shelby Cozette and Stephanie Sullivan each added a goal apiece. Jessica Luttrel dished out three assists in the victory.

OPRF begins the Pepsi Showdown at Deerfield on April 6.

OPRF girls water polo

The Huskies suffered a 10-5 loss to Loyola last week. Alison Coogan scored two goals for the Huskies, while pocketing four steals. OPRF also lost to York 6-5 last week.

Fenwick boys water polo

The Friars (9-2) went 2-1 last week, grabbing hard-fought victories over St. Viator and Waubonsie Valley, but falling to Brother Rice.

Fenwick edged St. Viator 18-13 behind John Osborne’s four goals and four assists. Connor Brown added three goals in win, while Dan Newell finished with nine saves in goal.

Connor Brown (3 goals), Matt Farmer (3) and Will Rigali (2) combined to score eight of Fenwick’s 13 goals in a 13-9 win over Waubonsie.

Fenwick fell to Brother Rice 13-10. Osborne, Viken Huening, Dominic Gallo and Rigali each scored two goals apiece in the loss.

OPRF boys track

OPRF’s Devin Banks, who is being recruited by several Division I schools, was named the Class 3A boys Athlete of the Meet at the Illinois Prep Top Times Indoor Classic held at Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday.

Banks won the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.83 seconds. He took second in the 55-meter dash in 6.35 seconds, an eyelash short of first place.

Liston named Ms. Basketball

Four-year varsity starter Tricia Liston, who led the Fenwick girls basketball team to 32 victories this season, including a third-place finish at the Class 4A State Finals, was selected 2010 Ms. Basketball of Illinois.

Liston scored a school record 2,713 total points in her high school career at Fenwick and averaged 28.8 points and 6.5 rebounds her senior year. The River Forest resident will play at Duke next season.

Ms. Basketball is voted on by sportswriters and coaches in the state of Illinois. It is presented by the Chicago Tribune and the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association.
