School board meetings can be very long, extremely meticulous and sometimes contentious. But they also have their moments of humor.
Witness last Tuesday’s regular meeting of the District 97 Board of Education. One of the agenda items involved mulch. Yep, mulch. It was an update on the district’s bids for mulch to be spread on school grounds. It came up midway through the meeting. Peter Barber, the board’s vice president overseeing the meeting, sarcastically said, “And now, the highlight of the meeting that everyone’s been waiting for: a discussion about the mulch bid.”
Laughter broke out. Not missing a beat, Therese O’Neill, assistant Superintendent for finance and operations chimed in, “Don’t hold your breath.”
