Chicago Mayor Richard Daley on Monday appointed Oak Park state. Rep. Deborah Graham (78th) as alderman for the city’s 29th Ward. Graham will represent a portion of the Austin community in the Chicago City Council.

Daley made one other aldermanic appointment on Monday, both needing approval by the City Council. Graham, an Austin native and resident, was first elected in 2002 as representative of the 78th district. She confirmed to Wednesday Journal on March 10 that she was interested in becoming a Chicago alderman.

She was among more than a dozen West Side hopefuls who applied or expressed interest in the position. Graham, 43, will give up her state rep seat to serve as 29th Ward alderman.

That post has been vacant since Feb. 1 when former Ald. Isaac Carothers pled guilty to corruption charges.
