A homeowner on the 700 block of Forest Avenue in River Forest was able to help police capture a burglary suspect March 11 after allegedly spotting the man walk away from their home with a sack of stolen goods.

It was shortly after noon when Corey McKinnie was seen walking from the burgled home, which, at the time of the alleged crime, was empty. When the homeowner stepped inside and realized a rear window had been forced open, authorities were notified. River Forest and Forest Park police chased McKinnie as he entered a wooded area near Maywood and took him into custody without incident, according to the department.

McKinnie, a 23-year-old Maywood resident, is accused of stealing cash and several electronic items from the home. All of the goods were returned to the homeowner.

The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office charged McKinnie with felony burglary.

Property damage

Several vehicles in the neighborhood of 300 Harrison and 1000 S. Ridgeland in Oak Park were vandalized during the overnight hours of March 12 into March 13. The suspect took a can of blue spray paint to a white Chrysler, a Volkswagen Passat and a Jeep Cherokee, among others. Most of the damage was discovered during the morning of March 13.

Sometime between 10:20 p.m. on March 7 and 6 a.m. the following day, a window on the southeast corner of Lincoln School, 1111 S. Grove, in Oak Park, was broken.

A window on a Cadillac Escalade parked on the 1400 block of Harlem in River Forest was smashed at about 11 p.m. on March 8. Nothing was reported missing from inside the vehicle.

Burglary

Two Schwinn bicycles were reported stolen from a garage on the 1200 block of North Lombard in Oak Park. The crime is believed to have occurred on March 12 or March 13.

A home on the 1100 block of Lyman in Oak Park was allegedly burglarized March 13, and the suspect took a computer monitor and several pink throw pillows. Police noted that the suspect likely entered through the home’s unlocked doors.

A garage on the 1000 block of North Humphrey in Oak Park was broken into March 12, and a green Schwinn, estimated to be worth $500, was stolen.

A garage on the 800 block of South Maple in Oak Park had a pair of aluminum ladders stolen sometime between March 7 and March 14. The items were worth an estimated $300.

Theft

A suspect took approximately $100 worth of gum from CVS, 345 Madison, Oak Park on March 14.

A man trying to steal four bottles of liquor from Jewel, 7525 Lake, River Forest, allegedly wrestled with store security before fleeing the store on the afternoon of March 8. The alcohol was recovered.

DUI, traffic

Charles King, Jr., 34, was involved in a minor traffic accident at the corner of Lake and William in River Forest on March 13, and was arrested for driving under the influence, and not having a valid license. No injuries were reported.

Willie Esper, 47, was arrested by River Forest police on March 12 for driving on a suspended license. He was taken into custody near the corner of Ashland and Washington, and received a felony charge for the alleged offense.

Jesus Morales, 26, was arrested in River Forest on March 12 near the junction of Bonnie Brae and Lake for driving without a valid license, among other traffic infractions.

Dario Gonzalez was taken into custody March 13 by River Forest police for driving with a suspended license, a suspended registration and no proof of insurance. Gonzalez, 33, was stopped near Lake and River Oaks.

Jose Reyna was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol on March 11 after driving his car onto the median at the corner of Harlem and North in River Forest. Reyna, 20, was charged with aggravated DUI, not having a valid license and no proof of insurance.

Drug charges

Jonathan Johnson, 25, of Forest Park, was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana during the early morning hours of March 13. He was taken into custody by Oak Park police on the 100 block of Forest Place.

Andrew Gorney, 24, and Danielle Hanson, 21, both of Wilmington, were charged with possession of a controlled substance March 14. Oak Park police arrested the suspects on the first block of Harrison.

Justina Vazquez, 25, of Chicago, was charged March 10 with possession of heroin with the intent to distribute the drug after police allegedly caught her with 36 doses of the narcotic packaged in foil. She was arrested by Oak Park police on the 6000 block of North Avenue.

Kevin Pokosa, 30, was arrested by Oak Park police March 10 during a traffic stop on the 600 block of South Harlem for possession of cocaine. Pokosa also lacked a valid driver’s license.

A juvenile was arrested by Oak Park police at Oak Park and River Forest High School March 8 for possession of drug paraphernalia. The teen is a resident of Oak Park.

On the 300 block of N. Kenilworth in Oak Park, authorities arrested a juvenile on March 8 for possession of drug paraphernalia.

These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Oak Park and River Forest police departments March 8-14. Not all incidents that occurred are listed. Anyone named in reports has only been charged with a crime and cases have not yet been adjudicated.

Welcome back

While appearing in traffic court for a Feb. 18 arrest, Cameo Potts, of Chicago, was taken back into custody by Oak Park police for allegedly defacing village property. According to authorities, Potts, 24, had scratched graffiti into the bathroom wall at the police station while he was in custody in February for the alleged traffic infraction.

Police recover stolen car, weapon

As an elderly man stepped out of his car after parking on the 100 block of Wesley in Oak Park on March 13, he was approached by a man armed with a .380 semi-automatic handgun and ordered to turn over the vehicle, according to police. With the suspect driving away, the rightful owner of the car dialed 911 and gave investigators a detailed description of the offender – and of the vehicle.

Officers quickly located the car and followed the driver, Dante White, into in alley. White allegedly abandoned his stolen ride and started running from police, but was found hiding in a backyard. Police found the gun in the car and the vehicle was returned.

White, 24, of Chicago, was charged with aggravated robbery.
