Erik’s Deli, 107 N. Oak Park Ave., will close for two months at the end of December and reopen with a fresher look.

Owner Ajay Bhatia says the redo will cost as much as $175,000 and will include installing a new awning, carpet, ceiling and floors. He’s enlisting the help of Oak Park-based Aria Group Architects, which has handled the interiors of such other local restaurant as Maya Del Sol, Sushi House, Cucina Paradiso and Barclay’s.

“We’re basically doing a face-lift to the place,” Bhatia said. “It’ll be a brand new Erik’s Deli.”

Bhatia has owned Erik’s for four years. The restaurant opened 27 years ago. He believes it’s in desperate need of a revival, which he says hasn’t been done since it opened.

“It’s kind of depressing when you walk in right now,” he said. “I want to brighten it up.”

The owner also plans to bring in new furniture, add a TV to watch sports and to start offering wireless in the deli. Bhatia plans to keep the menu the same, while possibly adding a few new additions. He also plans to keep the same hours.

Erik’s will close Jan. 1 for renovations and reopen on March 1.
