The Fenwick boys basketball team will work solely as a unit this season as the Friars look to make headway after graduating three top scorers from a team that went 17-9 last year.

“We don’t have that one Division I-bound player this year, but what we have is a group that plays very well together, as it proved during the summer,” said head coach John Quinn. “We’re a young team, but the talent is there and the experience isn’t far behind.”

Dave Sawada, a 6-foot-7 senior forward, returns this season. Sawada averaged just four points per game last season, but came on as the season progressed. Others back in the mix include Pat McGrail (5-10, senior guard), Mike Mullin (6-4, senior forward), Jack Dittmer (6-3, senior forward) and Xavier Vergara, a 6-1 senior swingman who came off the bench last season.

Coming off a 22-5 record with the sophomore team last season is Dylan Barnett, a 6-foot junior guard who averaged nine points, seven rebounds and six assists at the lower level. Juniors Tim Gancer and Tyler Sewall are also expected to see significant playing time this season.

Fenwick kicks off the season on Nov. 25 at the Lyons Township Thanksgiving Tournament.
