That large bird perched in the lobby of the main library, meanwhile, is not a starling. It’s a raven. Crafted by librarian/artist Jeanne Friedell, along with staffers Irene Balks and Debby Preiser, the big bird (no, not Big Bird) is part of the celebration of Edgar Allan Poe, ongoing through October.

Staff is hoping to find the bird a permanent home and raise some funds for the library as a bonus. Hence the Great Raven Drawing, now through Thursday, Oct. 29. Raffle tickets are $5 each (six tickets for $25) and proceeds go to the fund established by the Friends of the Oak Park Public Library at the Community Foundation of Oak Park-River Forest, support special projects at the library.

Purchase tickets at the circulation desk of the Main Library, 834 Lake; the Maze Branch, 845 Gunderson; and the Dole Branch, 245 Augusta. The drawing will be held on Thursday, Oct. 29, at 4 p.m. in the lobby of the main library.

The 6-foot-long raven will be delivered to the winner (in Oak Park area, that is) on Friday, Oct. 30, just in time for Halloween celebrations. For more information, call Debby Preiser at 708-697-6915.

Poe events continue through Oct. 31 at a variety of locations. For details, see www.oppl.org/bigread.
