Nicor crews closed the gas leak at 10:24 p.m. Residents are now being allowed to return to their homes after a nearly four-hour evacuation.
The 14 homes at which gas service was interrupted still have no gas. Nicor spokesman Richard Caragol said crews are continuing to work to restore the service. Crews worked for almost four hours to repair the leak in south Oak Park on the 1150 block of S. Highland. Residents in about 40 homes on and near the 1150 block of S. Highland were evacuated.
Caragol said the gas company’s crews began work at 6:33 p.m. to assess damage and make repairs after a contractor hit a 2-inch main near 1150 S. Highland early this evening.
Lt. Todd Johnson of the Oak Park fire department said the call about the gas main leak came in at about 6:20 p.m.
