An 88-year-old resident of the Oak Park Arms Retirement Community was found dead early Wednesday afternoon, the victim of an apparent accident. Bernice Goodis was found by housekeeping staff shortly after noon June 3.
“She either tripped or fell and caught her night shirt on a towel bar,” said Oak Park Police Commander Len Jorgenson.
The fall may have occurred after a stroke or heart attack. Dr. Nancy Jones, Cook County Medical Examiner, ruled Goodis died from hanging after getting caught on the towel bar, and that coronary heart disease was a secondary cause of death.
