Years ago, for a piece I wrote for a local newspaper, I learned that the River Forest Service Club had been founded decades earlier to resolve vicious electoral controversy and to finesse threatened intervention by “political parties.” Yes, that was before public projects required funding from state and federal governments and before the word “civility” had become quaint. But, in light of recent electoral turmoil, it might be a good idea for the River Forest Service Club – and all River Forest citizens – to reassert our responsibility for the effective governance of our community.
