For the fourth time in six months, a Charter One Bank in south Oak Park has been robbed.

Police say a man entered the Charter One branch at 820 S. Oak Park Ave. around 11:52 a.m., Monday, displayed a silver handgun and demanded money. He then ran out of the bank southbound on Oak Park Avenue. No one saw where the man went or if a vehicle was involved.

However, when employees in Fifth Third Bank, down the street at 850 S. Oak Park, looked out the window overlooking a breezeway that leads to the bank’s parking lot, they saw numerous bills fluttering about in the air. A dye pack placed in the thief’s bag with the currency had exploded. Bank employees were outside recovering the dye stained bills when police arrived. It’s unclear how much money the robber made off with.

The same Charter One Bank was also robbed on Dec. 3, 2008. No suspect has been arrested in that incident.

Another Charter One branch at 6020 Roosevelt Road has also been robbed twice within the same period. The morning of Dec.1, two men, one armed, got away with  $5,000. One of the men allegedly involved in that robbery was arrested after the same crew robbed the bank of $2,300 a second time on March 10. A dye pack exploded inside the getaway car in that incident.
