Jim Poulos, 84, local real estate broker

Jim T. Poulos, 84, of Westchester, formerly of River Forest, died on Feb. 1, 2009. A World War II army veteran, he worked as a real estate broker for many years. Upon retiring, he achieved his goal of spending time with his large extended family at their summer home in the north woods of Clam Lake, Wis. Prior to becoming a Realtor, he owned and operated his own grocery store for many years in Des Plaines, while raising his young family in Winston Park.

He was a member of American Legion Evzones Post #1039 and Holy Apostles Greek Orthodox Church. Friends and family say he wa a kind, compassionate man who served his family, his country, his fellow man and his community.

Jim Poulos was the husband of Bessie, nee Karagianis; the father of Georgienne Poulos (Emil Plecko), Thalia Poulos (companion Chris Miller), Tom (Angela), Eileen Poulos (William Fiscus) and the late Louis, D.O. (Diane Sclafani); the grandfather of eight; the great-grandfather of five; the brother of Fran (George) Katsaros, Dean and the late Nicholas, Ph.D.; the brother-in-law of Kally Rembos-Tsatsos (George, M.D.), Michael, D.D.S. (Vicki) Karagianis and Helen (James) Pierce; and the uncle of many nieces and nephews.

Nancy Stannard, 77, Longtime Community Chest employee

Nancy S. Stannard (nee Spooner), 77, of River Forest, died on Feb. 11, 2009 at Kindred Hospital in Northlake. Born on March 28, 1931 in Murphysboro to Lawrence and Irene Spooner, she attended Lincoln Elementary School, was a 1949 graduate of Murphysboro High School, and graduated from Southern Illinois University in 1953.

She taught special education in the Kankakee School District, then moved to Oak Park in 1965. She was employed with the Community Chest of Oak Park/River Forest until her retirement in 1979. A 44-year resident of the Oak Park/River Forest area, she was a member of the Oak Park Country Club, the River Forest Tennis Club, a Women’s Investment Club and the Keystone Garden Club.

Mrs. Stannard is survived by her husband, Richard D. of River Forest; her children, Lisa (Thomas) Woods of River Forest and Scott Shepherd of Oak Park; her stepchildren, Richard (Mary), Robert M.D. (Carole), David (Christine Comer) of River Forest, and Cynthia Stannard; the grandmother of 10; and her sister, Mary Jeanne (the late Charles “Fred”) Bock.

A visitation was held Feb. 15 at Drechsler, Brown & Williams Funeral Home. A memorial service was held Feb. 16 at First Presbyterian Church of River Forest, followed by private interment at Bronswood Cemetery in Oak Brook.
