As a former custodian at Oak Park and River Forest High School, I appreciate your covering the staff there. I was proud to be a part of that staff for 26 years from 1979 to 2005. I started as a custodian and ended my career as the dock man in charge of shipping and receiving. I still have a license plate reading “dock man” on my car.
The custodians at the high school are a dedicated group. They work for the school and the community. I have been in other schools and found OPRF to be one of the best maintained schools in the area. I was always conscious of the fact that I represented the high school wherever I went. People at the post office, banks, police department, village hall, other schools, board members, etc., still know me and recognize me as the “dock man from the high school.”
The custodial staff at OPRF is a hard-working, dedicated group of people who deserve to keep their jobs. Board members, think about what you have before you think about outsourcing your custodians.
