Friday, Jan. 16: Compass Rose Quintet (right), an Oak Park band known for its original instrumentals, will be playing at Trattoria 225 starting at 9 p.m. Gary Cleland on string bass, Dave Effgen on guitar, Larry Howe on mandolin, Atiba Y. Jali on percussion and Andy Stees on violin bring their talents together to deliver everything from gypsy swing and Celtic jigs to Caribbean sambas and Brazilian bossas.

The performance is part of the January lineup for 3rd Friday on Harrison Street, the night every month that shops and galleries in Oak Park’s Arts District are open later and when restaurants, like Trattoria 225 at 225 Harrison, offer something extra. The arts district is on Harrison Street from Ridgeland Avenue to Austin Boulevard. To see what else is going on along Harrison this 3rd Friday, go to http://oakparkartsdistrict.com.

The crafting will be from 1 to 3 p.m. To sign up, call the shop at 445-9906. Geppetto’s Toy Box is at 730 Lake in Oak Park.

Monday, Jan. 19: The new roster of classes at Marion Street Cheese Market wouldn’t be complete without a primer on craft beer. So in Beer 101, the market’s experts on the best from local breweries will answer the following questions: What’s this sediment in the bottom of my bottle? Why are you serving me beer in a goblet? Ale, lager – what’s the difference? You’ll get all the answers from 7 to 9:30 p.m. The class is $30. You must be 21 to sign up. Call 725-7200 to reserve a spot; space is limited. Marion Street Cheese Market is at 100 S. Marion in Oak Park.
