A 19-year-old Chicago man was charged Friday with first degree murder in the Wednesday shooting death of a River Forest resident.
According to Chicago Police Affairs spokesperson Jo Ann Taylor, Raul Velez, 37, of 1406 B N. Harlem was standing outside the Ebenezer Christian Center, 1657 Karlov St., in Chicago’s Humboldt Park neighborhood just before 12:30 p.m. Wednesday with another man. A car pulled up, the passenger stepped out and began shooting at the two men. Velez was hit twice, in the right shoulder and a leg. He died 45 minutes later at Mt. Sinai Hospital.
Juan Garcia, 19, of the 4100 block of West Potomac, is being held without bond on one count of first degree murder and one count of attempted murder. According to public records, Garcia was on probation after being convicted earlier this year for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. Media reports note that prosecutors have moved to cite him for violated probation.
Ebenezer Church Pastor Angel Collazo said Tuesday that Velez was not a member of his church. No one was available to talk last week at Velez’s reported River Forest address, a two-story townhome which has been co-owned by a relative of Velez since last year.
