River Forest officials announced Tuesday morning that Lake Street west of Thatcher Avenue would reopen in time for afternoon rush hour.

Public works crews were draining the last standing water off Lake Street early this afternoon and will be removing flood debris, including a downed tree near the Desplaines River bridge.

With Lake Street’s reopening, all but one major east-west route through River Forest will be accessible to traffic. North Avenue reopened early Tuesday morning.

Public Works Director Greg Kramer said a sandbag levee would remain in place across Chicago Avenue until at least Thursday. The street remains covered by deep floodwater. That water is expected to have receded by Thursday, when crews will be able to clean debris from the surface.
