Richard ‘Byrd’ Ryan, 50, Active in scouting

Richard K. Ryan, also known as Byrd, of Hinsdale, died on Aug. 7, 2008 after a year-long battle with cancer.


A U.S. Army National Guard veteran, he was actively involved in scouting with Troop 10 in
Hinsdale for 10 years, holding positions as Eagle coach, scoutmaster, and merit badge coach. He was known among family and friends for his spirit of fun, great sense of humor, knack for helping, and love for the outdoors. Rarely idle, he was reportedly always fixing a leak, playing in the backyard, building a patio, or building character.


The husband of Teresa C. Ryan (nee Ferrer) for 19 years, he was the father of Casey and Megan Ryan; the son of the late William A. and Jane M. Ryan; the brother of William A. (Linda) Ryan Jr., James A. (Kathy) Ryan, Michael D. Ryan, Mary Kathleen (Larry) McCahill, Mary Eileen (Robert) Altier, Jane Marie (Glen) Zilligen and Mary Margaret (Anthony) Daly; and uncle to 48 nieces and nephews.


Visitation was held Aug. 10 at Adolf Funeral Home and Cremation Services,

7000 S. Madison St.
, Willowbrook. Funeral Mass was celebrated Aug. 11 at St. John of the Cross Church.

Mary Giertz, 92


Mary A. Giertz (nee Yakush), 92, of
Oak Park, died on Aug. 25, 2008. 


The wife of the late John L. Giertz, she was the mother of  John A., Mary Ann (Earl) Olin, Richard L. (Caren) and Kathryn (Fred) Nirde; and the grandmother of Linda Olin Walsh, William Olin, Michelle Nirde, Adrienne Nirde and Aaron Giertz. 


Visitation was held Aug. 28 at Zimmerman-Harnett Funeral Home 7319 W. Madison St., Forest Park, where the service will be held at
, followed by interment at Concordia Cemetery.
