William C. Stretton, 82, of Savanna, died Monday, July 28, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center North, Clinton, Iowa. Born on Dec. 11, 1925, in Oak Park, he was the son of Robert F. and Violet (Burley) Stretton, Sr. Mr. Stretton attended Northwestern University in Evanston, where he played baseball. He served his country in the United States Air Corp at the end of World War II.

He married Anne Marie Janggen on Aug. 14, 1948 in Chicago. Anne died on Nov. 29, 2007 in Clinton, Iowa.

Mr. Stretton spent his childhood in Oak Park; Plymouth, England; County Laois, Ireland; and Williams Bay, Wis. In his younger years, he played baseball for various minor league teams in the White Sox organization before beginning his career as a teacher. He taught math at Lyons Township High School in LaGrange, before he joined the faculty at the College of DuPage.

After retirement, he moved to Savanna and enjoyed summers at his cabin in Marcell, Minn. He also enjoyed bird-watching and hiking.

William Stretton is survived by one brother, Robert F. Stretton Jr.; three nephews, Robert (Vicki) Stretton III, Mike (Tammy) Stretton, and Jeff (Sandy) Stretton; a niece Kathleen (John) Eaton; three great-nephews; and two great-great-nieces

William was preceded in death by his wife, Anne; one sister, Lucy V. Singer; one brother, Harry R. Stretton; and his sister-in-law, Martha.

A memorial gathering was held, Aug. 3, at the Savanna Moose Lodge in Savanna. According to his wishes, he will be cremated and his remains will be scattered.
