An Oak Park man was charged Friday with the aggravated battery of his live-in girlfriend’s 3-year-old son.

Matthew David Snipes, 22, of the 400 block of North Austin Boulevard, was arrested June 12 after a five-day investigation. During questioning the following day, he allegedly confessed to burning and striking the boy, police say, “to teach him a lesson.” The Cook County State’s Attorney’s felony review office approved charges of aggravated battery to a child, Class X felony, and aggravated domestic battery

“We got an admission from him,” said Oak Park Police Commander Clemet Harbour. He said the boy’s mother became concerned with his behavior after she returned home June 7 and took him to the West Suburban Hospital emergency room.

“A doctor saw signs of abuse,” said Harbour, who described the injuries only as “burns and bruises.” Harbour said Snipes, who has no previous history of such offenses, had apparently disciplined the boy. A judge on Saturday set his bond at $500,000.
