The OPRF boys track and field team won four events to finish runner-up with 128.5 points at the Fenwick Sectional held at Concordia University in River Forest on Friday.

Finishing with 169 points, York won the sectional that boasted nine meet records, including OPRF’s Evan Scott in the triple jump (45-2.5) and Josh Runnels in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles (36.60 seconds).

In all, the Huskies qualified 11 events for the Class AA State Meet to be held at Eastern Illinois University’s O’Brien Stadium in Charleston this weekend.

Along with Scott and Runnels in their respective events, Peter Geraghty qualified in the pole vault with a leap of 14-9, tying the sectional meet record held by his brother, Tom. Jhamaar Caldwell won the discus with a toss of 144-2.50, while Patrick Geoghegan placed second in both the 1600-meter run (4:22.63) and the 3200 (9:26.30).

Other state qualifiers for OPRF included Brandon Smith in the 200-meter dash (22.55) and Steve Harper in the shotput (52-01).

The Huskies qualified all three relay teams. The 4×100 and 4×200 group of Smith, Runnels, Levell Coppage and Eric Starks placed third (42.35) and second (1:27.54) respectively at the sectional to qualify for state. The 4×800 relay team of Kevin Binns, Kevin Bakker, Brendan Donley, and Colin McCarey qualified for state by finishing second in 8:03.48.

Smith places fifth at state

Brittany Smith came away with the OPRF girls track and field team’s best finish at the Class AA State Meet held at O’Brien Stadium in Charleston on Saturday.

The junior finished fifth in the discus with a personal best toss of 143-2. Smith also placed eighth in the shotput (41-3/4).

Katherine Rack improved on her state finish last season by placing eighth in both the 3200-meter run (10:59.14) and the 1600 (5:05.88). Both times were personal bests for the sophomore.

Kaniece Pitts finished 12th overall in the long jump with a leap of 17-9.25.

Other top finishers for OPRF included Kirsten Weismantle’s 10-6 vault, and the 4×100 relay team of Pitts, Raven Adams, Tejuanna Williams and Kristen Kwakwa placing 14th in 49.02 seconds.

Shannon wins 800 at sectional

Fenwick’s Ryan Shannon won the 800-meter run with a time of 1:55.02 at the Fenwick Sectional on Friday. Shannon’s time qualified the senior for this weekend’s state meet.
