River Forest Fire Chief Jim Eggert remains at Loyola Medical Center following emergency open heart surgery Friday. Village Administrator Steve Gutierrez said Village President Frank Paris appointed Deputy Chief Robert Nortier acting fire chief on Friday. That action was formally approved by the village board Monday night.
Sources say Eggert’s doctors determined he needed surgery after he visited Loyola for treatment Friday. Gutierrez, who spoke with Eggert Monday afternoon, said Eggert’s doctors were satisfied with the results.
“The doctors said it was a successful surgery and that they did everything they wanted to do,” he said. Eggert is doing well and looking forward to returning to work “as soon as possible,” likely within eight weeks.
“He sounds great,” said Gutierrez. “They had him up and walking around today.”
Former River Forest fire chief and current village Trustee Russ Nummer said Saturday that as deputy chief, Nortier already is primarily responsible for the daily operations of the fire department.
“I have every confidence in Bob’s ability to take over,” said Nummer. Gutierrez seconded that view Monday, noting that Nortier has served as acting chief in the past.
