With snow and freezing rain hitting Oak Park hard over the past week, salt is in dwindling supply at local retailers.

To answer the shortage, the village is handing out free salt, albeit in limited supply, at its public works facility. Oak Park residents quick enough to get there, can grab up to five pounds of salt from a green refuse bin near the vehicle station at South Boulevard near Lombard Avenue, according to a village press release.

The village made the move after freezing rain caused an overwhelming demand for salt, and weather forecasts predicting more freezing rain and snow this evening and tomorrow. The free salt offer is a one-time only, and village officials urge residents to purchase their own salt or other ice-melting products as soon as possible, the release said.
