Members of my young mens’ pacifist group, American Families for Peace in Oak Park (referenced in How pacifists feel about Memorial Day, LifeLines, May 30) recently attempted to call the White House to express our concerns about national affairs. We asked to speak to President Bush and were told by the White House operator that we “had no authority to talk to the president.”

When we asked to be transferred to the citizens’ “Comment Line” (an answering machine), we were told that the hours had been shortened to weekdays, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. EST. This President continues to insulate and isolate himself from vox populi. What a lesson in civics for these boys, courtesy of the Bush White House!
