Oak Park resident Cathy Krieger (president and CEO of The Children’s Place Association), Art Jones of South Carolina (formerly of Forest Park), and River Forest resident Don Offermann recently joined 100 other golfers at the Children’s Place Association Charity Golf Outing at the River Forest Country Club in Elmhurst. More than $35,000 was raised to support low-income HIV/AIDS-affected children and families.

ACL joins the Economy Shop

The Animal Care League will now be in charge of the two menswear rooms at Oak Park’s Economy Shop. The Animal Care League serves Oak Park and surrounding communities, taking in stray animals, providing necessary medical care and arranging adoptions. The Economy Shop is a resale department store on Grove Avenue and South Boulevard that benefits six local social service agencies.

Mercy, mercy, three

Misericordia’s annual Heart of Mercy Ball is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 10, at the Chicago Hilton and Towers, 720 S. Michigan Ave., Chicago. Patricia Devereux of River Forest is president of the Women’s Board of Misericordia. Maureen Bransfield of River Forest is chairman of the Heart of Mercy Ball. Untying the ties that bind

Long-time Oak Park resident Jody Raphael has completed a three-book series about the ways that violence keeps women poor with the recent publication of Freeing Tammy: Women, Drugs, and Incarceration. Each of the three books tells the story of one Chicago woman’s experience with violence and consequent entrapment in poverty. Raphael is an attorney who works as senior research fellow at DePaul University’s College of Law.

Cadet in top 20 percent

Cadet Christopher J. McCole, son of Kevin and Jane McCole of River Forest, recently earned the Superintendent’s Award for Achievement at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. The Superintendent’s Award for Achievement is presented to the top 20 percent of cadets who excel in academic, military and physical programs. McCole graduated from Oak Park and River Forest High School in 2006. He plans to graduate from West Point in 2010 and be commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army.

Judson welcomes new pastor

Judson Baptist Church, the 85-year-old congregation at 1252 N. Austin Blvd., Oak Park, recently announced the installation of its new pastor, Rev. Rodney Lara. Rev. Lara and his family re-located from Dallas, Texas, where he served as minister of families at Northwest Bible Church. “Judson is a special Christian community. Its class, economic, educational and cultural diversity is a genuine, modern-day biblical example of the Acts 2 church,” stated Lara. “I consider myself blessed to serve as its eighth pastor and its second African-American senior pastor.”
