A high-speed single car crash in the 1150 block of South Cuyler Avenue claimed the life of a Melrose Park man Saturday night. Agustin Gomez, 48, was killed after the vehicle 17-year-old Eric Gomez was driving left the roadway around 9:15 p.m., struck a street light pole, two houses and a tree before flipping over on the parkway at Cuyler and Fillmore.
Police say their preliminary investigation indicates that alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.
The elder Gomez was transported to Loyola Medical Center in Maywood, where he was pronounced dead. Eric Gomez was treated for non-life threatening injuries. He is currently being held by Oak Park police for a DUI investigation.
The Gomez’s 1998 Ford Explorer left approximately 60 feet of skid marks on the street showing it skidding across Cuyler while headed northbound. The SUV jumped the curb, hit a concrete street lamppost, and traveled across a lawn, striking the bottom stairs of a front porch and tearing off its wrought iron railings.
The car continued north across the corner house’s sidewalk, catching the bottom stair there and tearing off the railings. At that point the vehicle appears to have gone air borne, striking the corner of the stucco house several feet off the ground, then continuing into a parkway tree before landing upside down on the parkway. The tree bears marks from the collision nearly ten feet off the ground.
