I can’t believe you haven’t gotten any comments on this column [High school athletes get personal, Brad Spencer, Sports, July 11]. It is unbelievable the number of high school students who have private trainers. What happened to kids being kids? On my daughter’s volleyball team, there is a girl who has been working with a coach since second grade (she’s now a senior!). We can’t all expect our kids to be pro athletes. I sometimes think it’s the parents wallet that’s attending tryouts: How much are you willing to spend to get your kid an advantage? I know one coach who during volleyball tryouts noted who had attended clinics, played club, taken lessons, etc. Can’t kids just be kids and play for the love of the game rather than the thrill of the college scholarship?
