Derek Schlecker fell to 0-3 on Saturday when he yielded a walk-off run in the ninth inning of rookie Orem’s 4-3 loss at Ogden. Schlecker came on in the seventh with his team trailing 3-1 and retired his first eight batters, but two singles and a double allowed the winning run to score. On July 30, he tossed three hitless innings with four strikeouts. Schlecker went 0-2 with a 3.09 ERA in July and has a 4.13 ERA on the year.
After hitting .340 in May and .338 in June, Double A Midland’s Vasili Spanos dropped to .239 with only two walks in July. He went 3-for-14 (.214) with two doubles and two RBIs last week. Spanos is hitting .283 with a .340 on-base percentage.
Tim Dennehy did not pitch last week. Denney went 3-0 with a 1.59 ERA in July, holding opponents to a .138 average. He is 4-1, (3.09 ERA) on the season for the Gulf Coast League Yankees.
Second baseman Caleb Fields went 4-for-17 with a double and an RBI in five games last week as his average dipped slightly to .272. Fields has a homer and 12 RBIs in 28 games with the GCL Pirates.
