Bob O’Connor, 61, of River Forest, competed in the National Senior Games/Senior Olympics in Louisville, Kentucky.

O’Connor finished 12th in a field of 41 runners in the 60-64 age group of the 800-meter run. O’Connor, who qualified for the Nationals by placing second at the Illinois State Meet back in September, timed out at 2:49.

Local female pugilist wins at Golden Gloves tourney

Oak Parker Samantha Guzman took first place at the Women’s National Golden Gloves tournament earlier this month.

Guzman, a student at OPRF High School, defeated Nicole Delaney of New York by a 3-2 decision to win at 106 pounds.

The flyweight pugilist is also a Silver Gloves champion. Guzman has aspirations to someday make the USA women’s boxing team.

McCormick shoots
par for the course

Oak Parker Michael McCormick tied for medalist at the qualifying tournament for entry into the Illinois Amateur Golf Championship last week.

McCormick, 19, a 2005 graduate of OPRF High School, shot par 72 at Cinder Ridge Golf Course in Wilmington. McCormick is entering his junior year at Middlebury College in Vermont.

Strikers to hold tryouts
for traveling teams

The OPRF Strikers Soccer Club will be holding a supplemental tryout on

Thursday for several age groups to play traveling club soccer for the 2007-08 soccer year (August 2007 through June 2008). Strikers is especially looking for U-11 boys and girls (birthdays between 8/1/96 -7/31/97) and U-9 girls (8/1/98 – 7/31/99).

The club also runs a special program with licensed, certified professional coaches in a weekly camp-like program for young soccer players who are ages 6 to 10 years of age (usually entering 2nd grade through 4th grade). This eight-week hourly program is held locally for players who are not on traveling soccer teams.
