I recently walked into my training facility to find an article lying on a bench cut out with the heading “Ultimate Fighting is ultimately ridiculous” [Sports, June 6].
Before I go off on this rant, I would like to state that I am 24 – a college-educated teacher/coach in the northwest suburbs. In college I even took a jounalism course, and I can remember one thing my professor told me: Whenever you’re writing a column, make sure it is factual and not opinionated.
Maybe this is the Brad Spencer corner of opinions column but if it’s not, I suggest you do a little bit of research before you jump on your soapbox, belittling a very worldwide creditable sport. Yes, I said sport. The name of the sport is called Mixed Martial Arts, not “Ultimate Fighting.” You see, Ultimate Fighting is one organization that sanctions these Mixed Martial Arts events among thousands worldwide.
Yes, you were correct about John McCain and his comments on “Human Cock Fighting.” That was also said in the middle to late ’90s when the sport was not regulated and there was not a gaming commision involved, whereas today in the year 2007, it is regulated. There are more rules to protect the athletes. Yes, I said athletes. I train with some of the best athletes in the Chicago area.
I could go on and on with this topic and even say some rude things, but I will not stoop to the “brainless” level that you expect. I will simply end by saying, please do your homework before you start tearing into a sport that is working very hard to remain creditable and honorable. There’s a reason for a remote. When basketball or ballet dancing comes on, I just turn the channel, and I suggest you do the same.
