By the time I attended Emerson Junior High, 1984-1986, there was no longer any playground that I remember–rather, a macadam playing field on the Washington side, and a grassy field on the opposite side. We had no recess, and went outside only during P.E. on nice days and after lunch (15 minutes or so). Lunch time was spent chatting, flirting, and ball-playing. We were perhaps growing too old for slides–although I’m sure we used them at the neighborhood parks.
My Emerson gang continues to e-mail regularly, as we are scattered about the country. I miss Oak Park, too, and still hold my junior high friends most dear.
