Boy oh boy, did Wednesday Journal ever get it wrong when it refused to endorse John Hayes for re-election as library board trustee. First, the Journal praised the library board for passing a referendum to build a new main branch and then maintaining library services during construction at a temporary site in Forest Park. The board was lauded for how beautifully the new main branch turned out. The Journal also commended the library board for renovations of the Dole and Maze branches, as well as the hiring of a new executive director. The Journal forgot to mention the board’s creation of a human resources position at the library and, oh yes, the continued financial health of the library.
Well, John Hayes was front and center for all of the above. I served on the library board with John. I have never seen more devotion or dedication in service as I saw with John Hayes. As president of the board during construction of the new main branch, John spent innumerable hours consulting with the architects and contractors. His attention to detail contributed greatly to that project coming in on time and under budget.
Oak Park can expect more of the same from John if he is re-elected to the library board. I hope Oak Park recognizes John Hayes’ contributions and joins me in voting for him as library board trustee.
